On set: SHERLOCK HOLMES IN THE MOUNTAINS

Reading time

What happened to Sherlock Holmes in 1891? A TV series, currently being filmed with elaborate sequences, fight scenes, and stunts at multiple locations in the South Tyrolean mountains, investigates the mystery and tells an exciting story between mystery‑thriller and crime drama.

The script picks up exactly where Arthur Conan Doyle’s story ends: Sherlock Holmes plunges into the depths at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland during the bitter fight with his archenemy Professor Moriarty and is initially presumed dead. About three years later, he reappears in London. What happened during that time? The series addresses this question; it began as an ambitious coproduction by Sky, SRF, and ARD Degeto Film, withshooting in Switzerland, Germany, and South Tyrol. IDM Film & Music Commission supports the project with a contribution of 500,000. The territorial effect applies at least 150%of the grant must be reinvested in South Tyrol.

International cast and crew

The lead roles are played by well‑known British actor Rafe Spall (“Life of Pi”, “Prometheus”, “Trying”) and Swiss actress Deleila Piasko (“Die Zweiflers”, “Tatort”, “Der Pass”). A crew of over 100 people is deployed, including many South Tyrolean film professionals. Among them is Mattia Ottaviani: he graduated from the ZeLIG Film School in Bolzano and specializes as a steadicam operator, with many years of experience on feature films, TV series, documentaries, commercials, and music videos on national and international sets. Also on board is Lorenzo Misia; as boom operator, he ensures the correct sound. He also studied editing and sound at ZeLIG in Bolzano. For both, international film projects are a major opportunity to demonstrate their skills and generate more work.

Three shooting locations in South Tyrol

Claudia Bluemhuber, who co-wrote the script and co-directs with Pierre Monnard, is also involved as an executive producer and engaged in every detail on set. She praises the St. Anna Pfistradalm at 1,350 metres, where a historic hut — also serving a museum function — provides the backdrop for a fight scene. Time seems to stand still there, fitting the staging. “It is difficult to find such authentic locations, but with our production partners in South Tyrol — Wilfried Gufler from Albolina Film and Markus Frings from Movie.mento — we repeatedly found suitable locations. One of the key scenes will be filmed at the Waterfall of Parcines,” Bluemhuber explains. The historic Fischgader farm near San Valentino alla Muta also serves as a film set.
